Kevin the traveler is back! I don’t know what you have been doing for the past 6 months (yes, it has been 6 months! You can find my previous post here: https://www.sen-do.co.jp/blog/1190/), but as you can guess, on my side, I… suspense… traveled of course! Hopefully you are sitting comfortably, and have your travel pillow, because we are ready to take off. Here is our program for today:

USJ、いざ出発！
私が京都で学生だった4、5年前...(えーと...実際は17年前ですが)、USJに行く機会がありました。
驚くかもしれませんが、これが私の初めてのテーマパークだったんです！
パリにはディズニーランドがありますが、私の実家はパリから800km以上離れていたので、一度も行ったことがありませんでした。とても楽しかったです！当時はスパイダーマン（トビー・マグワイア版）がとても人気で、数時間の長蛇の列だったことを覚えています！
そして今日、スパイダーマンは今でも人気ですが、今や3人もいます！（全員の名前を言えますか？）、そして新しい映画の特殊効果は本当に驚くべきものです！でも話がそれましたね。
私たちがUSJに行くことに決めた理由は、今ではハリーポッターとマリオのエリアがあるからなんです！
マリオは私が10代の頃に初めて買ったニンテンドーゲームだったと思うので、チケットを買った時はとてもワクワクしていました。パーク内ではマリオの世界に入り込んだような素晴らしい雰囲気を作り出していましたが、アトラクション自体は少し子供向けという感じがしました。
一方、ハリーポッターは素晴らしかったです！バタービールを飲み、ホグワーツを見学し、アトラクションはもっとスリリングでした！城の周りを飛んでいるような感覚で、ドラゴンなども登場します！これがおそらくその日の一番のお気に入りでした。
結局のところ、USJに行って良かったと思っています！
また15年後に行けるでしょう。そのときは何が人気になっているでしょうか？
When I was a student in Kyoto 4 or 5 years ago… (erm… 17 years ago actually), I got the opportunity to go to USJ. This might sound surprising but, it was my first theme park! We do have Disneyland in Paris, but I lived more than 800km away from Paris, so I never went there. I really enjoyed it! Back at that time, Spiderman was very popular (the one with Tobey Maguire), and I remember the queue was hours long!
Here we are today, and while Spiderman is still popular, there are 3 of them now! (can you name them all?), and the special effects in the new movies are really mind-blowing! But, I digress, and the reason why we decided to go to USJ, is because they now have a Harry Potter and Mario section!
I think Mario was the first game I got with my Nintendo when I was a teenager, so I was really excited when we bought the tickets. And while they did a great job at the park to make you feel like you are inside Mario’s world, I have to say that the ride was a bit disappointing. The queue was of course very long, and I was fine with this, but it did feel like the ride was very short, and also aimed at young kids.
Harry Potter on the other hand was great! We drank butterbeer, toured Hogwarts and the ride was more intense! You feel like you are flying around the castle, and there are dragons and everything! This was probably my favourite part of the day.
In the end, I am still happy we went to USJ. Now I can go again in 15 years. What do you think will be popular at that time?
関西の再発見
日本に10年以上住んでいると、物事が普通になり、初めて来た時ほどワクワクしなくなってきます。
日本がいかに魅力的であるかを思い出す最良の方法は、友人や家族を招き、彼らの目を通して日本を再び見ることです。彼らが食べたばかりの食事がいかに美味しかったか、ガチャポンがいかに可愛いかについて話すのを聞くのはとても楽しいですし、自分も昔そうだったことを思い出させてくれます！
幸運なことに、妻の兄と彼女が日本に来て、私たちは彼らを関西に連れて行きました。神戸に立ち寄った時、彼の兄は神戸牛を食べたいと熱望していたので、日本に住んで10年目にして初めて、私も神戸牛を食べました。
通常、私はヨーロッパの牛肉の方が好きです。フランスはとても柔らかくて美味しい牛肉で有名です。だから神戸牛への期待はそれほど高くありませんでした。しかし正直に言うと、思った以上に美味しかったです。
それは脂肪の量を選べるからだと思います。私にとって、日本の一般的な牛肉は脂が多すぎる傾向があり、フランス人にとって、脂肪の多い牛肉は低品質の牛肉と同じです。しかし、脂肪がほとんどない部位を選ぶことができたので、神戸牛を本当に楽しんで食べることができました。
体験自体も素晴らしかったです。目の前の鉄板で肉を調理し、食材の産地を説明し、神戸牛についての詳細を教えてくれました。
また、家族を奈良に連れて行き鹿を見せ、京都にも行きました。京都はおそらく日本で最も美しい都市の一つですから。
When you have been in Japan for more than 10 years, things tend to become normal, and less exciting than when you came for the first time.
The best way to remind you how exciting Japan can be, is having friends and family over, and seeing Japan again through their eyes. Hearing them talking about how good the food you just had was, and how cute the gachapon can be is quite fun, and it can remind you when you were like this too!
Luckily, my wife’s brother and his girlfriend came to Japan and we took them to Kansai. We stopped in Kobe, and her brother really wanted to eat Kobe beef, so for the first time in 10 years in Japan, I also had some Kobe beef.
Usually, I prefer beef from Europe. France is quite famous for having very tender and good beef. So my expectations for Kobe beef were not very high. But I have to say, it was better than I initially thought it would be. I think it is because you can choose the level of fat. For me, Japanese regular beef tends to be too fatty, and for French people, fatty beef equates to low quality beef. But since you can choose pieces with very little fat, I really enjoyed eating Kobe beef.
The experience was also nice. They cooked the meat in front of us on hot plates, and took the time to explain where the ingredients were coming from, and give more details about Kobe beef.
We also took the family to Nara to see the deer, and to Kyoto, because it’s probably one of the prettiest cities in Japan.
初めての中国本土！
アジアに17年住んでいますが、中国に行ったことがありませんでした！訂正しましょう、中国本土に行ったことがありませんでした。
香港には何度か行ったことがありますが、それは中国としてはカウントされない気がします。
そこで、3日間の週末の旅行先を探していたとき、福岡から上海への旅行が安くて簡単だと気づいたのです（往復約2万円で2時間のフライト）。簡単な決断でした！
西洋的な育ちと西洋メディアの影響で、上海と聞くと、汚染された、非常に騒がしく、スクーターでいっぱいの、高価な都市をイメージしがちです。しかし実際は、そのほとんどが間違っていました。
まず第一に、特に都市が汚染されているとは感じませんでした。もちろん大都市なので、多少の汚染はあります。でも、それは普通のレベルに感じました。
また、スクーターがたくさんあると思ったのは正しかったですが、予想していなかったのは、その大多数が電動スクーターだったことです。そのおかげで、街はとても静かでした。多くの車も電気自動車でした。このことが、私が思っていたよりも都市の汚染が少ない理由の一つだと思います。日本もこのような変化を受け入れて、もっと電気自動車やスクーターを普及させればいいのにと思います。
それ以外では、はい、食べ物は素晴らしく、交通機関はとても近代的で、Alipay（中国のモバイル決済サービス）でほぼすべてを支払うことができ、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました！ぜひおすすめします。
In my 17 years in Asia, I have never been to China! Let me correct that statement, I have never been to Mainland China. I have been to Hong Kong a few times, but I feel like this does not count as China.
So when we looked for a destination for a 3-day weekend, and realized it was cheap, and easy to travel to Shanghai from Fukuoka (a 2-hour flight for about 20,000Y round-trip), it was an easy decision!
Because of my Western upbringing and Western media influence, when I think about Shanghai, I tend to think of a polluted, extremely noisy, scooters-filled, and expensive city. As it turns out, I was mostly wrong. First of all, I did not feel like the city was particularly polluted. Of course, it’s a big city, so there is going to be some pollution. But it felt like normal levels.
Also, while I was right to think there would be lots of scooters, what I was not expecting was that the vast majority of them would be electric scooters. Thanks to that, the streets were very quiet. A lot of cars were also electric. I think this plays a role in the city being less polluted than I thought. I wish Japan could embrace this kind of change and have more electric cars and scooters too.
Other than that, yes the food was amazing, the transports were very modern, you can pay virtually everything with Alipay, and we had a great time there! I would definitely recommend going.
最終目的地ハノイ、ベトナム！
そして最後に、数週間前の最新の旅行はハノイでした。
以前は南部のホーチミン市に行ったことがありましたが、北部のハノイは初めてでした。
こちらも近いので、日帰りでハロン湾にも行きました。その決断をして本当に良かったです！場所は非常に美しかったです。何千もの石灰岩の小さな島々で構成されています。
ドウゴー洞窟も訪れましたが、これほど巨大な洞窟を見たことがないと思います！メインの洞窟に入ると、自分がとても小さく感じられます。フランス人はこれを「Grotte des Merveilles」と呼んでいます。「驚異の洞窟」という意味です。
ハノイ市内では、主に博物館を訪れ、ショッピングをしながら歩き回り、美味しい食べ物やコーヒーを探し、そして暑さが半端なかったので、エアコンのある店を探し回りました！
私はあまりコーヒー党ではありません（30歳を過ぎてからコーヒーを飲み始めました！）が、ベトナムは美味しいコーヒーで有名です。特に試してみたかったのは、エッグコーヒーです。卵黄、練乳、砂糖を使い、ブラックコーヒーの上に乗せます。飲み物というより、デザートを食べているような感覚です。ユニークな体験なので、少なくとも一度は試してみることをお勧めします。
博物館も興味深く、フランス植民地時代に使われていたホアロー収容所も訪れました。ベトナムの歴史について学ぶのは少し居心地が悪かったです。なぜなら、私はフランス人で、妻はアメリカと日本のハーフであり、最近ベトナムを植民地化したり戦争をしていた国がまさにその3カ国だからです。しかし、将来同じ過ちを繰り返さないように、過去について学ぶのは良いことだと思います。
Finally, my latest trip was to Hanoi a few weeks ago. I’ve been to Ho Chi Minh city in the south before, but never to Hanoi in the north.
Because it is also close, we went to Ha Long Bay for a day trip. And I am happy we made that decision! The place was extremely beautiful. It’s made of thousands of limestone small islands. We visited the Dau Go Cave as well, and I don’t think I have ever seen such a gigantic cave before! When you get in the main chamber, it makes you feel very small. French people call it the Grotte des Merveilles, which translates to “The Cave of Marvels”.
In the city of Hanoi, we mostly visited museums, walked around shopping, looked for good food and coffee, and hunted down shops with AC, because it was super hot!
I am not a big coffee person (I only started drinking coffee after I turned 30!), but Vietnam is famous for good coffee. There was something in particular that we wanted to try, and it is egg coffee. They use egg yolk, condensed milk, sugar, and put it on top of black coffee. More than a drink, it feels like you are eating a dessert. I would recommend trying this at least once, as it is a unique experience.
The museums were also interesting, and we visited the Hoa Lo Prison, used by the French colonists. Learning about Vietnam’s history felt a bit awkward, because I am French, and my wife is mixed American and Japanese, and the countries that recently colonized or were at war with Vietnam are exactly those 3 countries. But I guess it’s a good idea to learn about the past, so you don’t repeat the same mistakes in the future.

最後に
旅行についての投稿を書くたびに、読者が退屈しないように短くしようと思うのですが、今回もまた長い投稿になってしまいました！すみません！
しばらくの間、これがアジアでの旅行について話す最後の投稿になるかもしれません。ご存知かもしれませんが、妻は現在アメリカで1年間を過ごしているので、旅行できる機会があれば、おそらくそちらに行くことになるでしょう。
これの良い点は、ユタ州が非常に景色の良い州なので、次回皆さんとお話しする際には、たくさんのことについて話し、多くの写真をお見せできることでしょう。

Each time I write a post about my travels I think I want to make it short so people don’t get bored reading it. But this time I wrote another long post! Sorry about that!
I think this might be my last post talking about my trips in Asia for a little while. As you might have heard, my wife is now spending a year in the USA, so each chance I get to travel, I will likely go there.
The positive aspect of this is that Utah is a very scenic state, so I will hopefully have many things to talk about and many pictures to show you next time I talk with you.
Take care and see you in 6 months again!
